PALE HORSE FISHING CHARTERS

OFFSHORE - DEEP SEA

WHAT IS OFFSHORE FISHING?

Offshore fishing is for those who would like some varsity level fishing!  The Gulf of America has tons of world class fish to target, including grouper, snapper, sharks and more!  On offshore trips, we head out into federal waters and fish anywhere from 9 to 50+ miles offshore.  Although you will be in deeper water, you are still in the Gulf which means that the seas are usually calm.  There are thousands of shipwrecks, reefs, ledges and more to target trophy fish.  These trips are perfect for big game species, as well as grocery shopping!  There are a few different types of fish that you will encounter when fishing offshore.  First you have pelagic fish.  These fish inhabit the water column in open water and can usually be found near the surface.  Types of fish included are King Mackerel, cobia, amberjacks, permit, African pompano and sometimes even Mahi!  On the opposite side of the spectrum, you have bottom dwellers.  These fish live in the cracks and crevices of the ocean bottom and within the reefs, shipwrecks or other structure.  Fish in this category include: snapper, grouper, jewfish and amberjack.  Fishing techniques will vary depending on what types of fish you are targeting.  And, just like the nearshore areas, there are plenty of sharks.  Offshore however, the sharks are BIG, so bring your A-game!

This is our go-to trip for:

  • Serious anglers looking to target world class fish
  • Groups looking for a lot of fish to keep for dinner
  • Outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy being fully engulfed in the wild of the ocean

WHAT TO EXPECT TO CATCH ON AN OFFSHORE TRIP
Every trip is a little different — that’s the fun of it. Depending on the season, the tide, and a little bit of luck, we might target:

  • Snapper – Offshore snapper are much bigger than their shallower-dwelling counterparts.  Depending on the time of year, we may target mangrove, lane, yellowtail, cubera, mutton or American red snapper.  They are the local favorite for table fare.
  • Cobia – Extremely strong and excellent fighters, cobia are one of the most attractive nearshore gamefish.  They also make excellent table fare.
  • Grouper – We have several different species of grouper; red, gag and black are the usual suspects.  Grouper are great fighters and are excellent eating fish!
  • Jewfish – The beast of the reef, jewfish (aka Goliath grouper) will put any angler to the test.  Juveniles are typically 20-50 pounds, with the adults reaching 800 pounds!
  • Mackerels – Spanish mackerel are a favorite among customers, especially when they get in massive schools of thousands.  They are hard fighting, aggressively take baits, and fill the cooler.  In the fall and winter, the king mackerel show up.  They are very similar to Spanish, except that they are WAY bigger, reaching upwards of 50 pounds!
  • Sharks - There is certainly no shortage of sharks in our local waters.  They are around all year, but spring-fall is typically prime time.  Common species caught include; blacktip, spinner, sandbar, bull, hammerhead, nurse, and tiger sharks.  If you're ready to catch jaws, we're ready to make the introduction!
  • African pompano – These fish are only in deeper water.  They look very similar to permit, however they get enormous and are also great eating!

We’ll always tailor the trip to what’s biting best that day, and what you’re excited to target. If you’re serious about fishing, the offshore trip is the one for you!
